
Chair
General Position Summary
The MSC Abbott Family Leadership Conference Chair oversees all MSC Abbott events, including the annual conference. This role serves as the primary liaison between the conference staff (18 members), the MSC Council (Executive Officers and other student leaders), and the Abbott family, ensuring consistent communication and coordination.
The Chair is responsible for leading the weekly Joint meeting and actively contributing to both the Logistics and Relations meetings. They also meet weekly with the Vice Chairs and Raye Leigh to align on key decisions.
The Chair operates within three key circles of leadership:
- Chair and Advisor
- Chair, Advisor, and Vice Chairs
- The Above, Plus Directors
During events and the conference, the Chair adapts to the needs of the Directors, providing support wherever necessary to ensure smooth execution.
Minimum Requirement
- One year of MSC Leadership experience or equivalent.

Required MSC Officer Responsibilities

Attend Weekly Monday Night Meetings: When creating your academic schedule, please be mindful of your requirement to attend Committee Advancement Team meetings every Monday night at 6 p.m. |
Assist with MSC Committee Alignment to MSC Programs: Committee Chairs have the responsibility of directing their committee’s goals and year to meet the needs of the department. |
Complete the full Academic Year: MSC Officer positions are meant to be performed for the full academic year from Fall to Spring, with the exception of some work from home during semester breaks (winter and summer). |
Attend Leadership Launch: Every spring, the MSC Council hosts Leadership Launch in order to assist with the transition of new leaders. |
Represent your committee at Unity Dinner: Unity Dinner is a way to bring all outgoing and incoming officers to gain an understanding and awareness of diversity in leadership. |
Understand the Student-Staff Partnership: The MSC Programs Office operates under a unique 1:1 relationship between student and advisor |
Learning Outcomes
- Strategic Leadership & Decision-Making – Develop the ability to lead a diverse team, facilitate meetings, and make informed decisions that impact the success of the conference and related events.
- Stakeholder Communication & Relationship Management – Gain experience in effectively liaising with multiple stakeholders, including conference staff, university executives, and external partners, while maintaining professional and productive relationships.
- Adaptive Problem-Solving & Event Execution – Enhance skills in navigating complex logistical challenges, responding to real-time event needs, and ensuring seamless execution by coordinating with directors and vice chairs.
Preferred Experience, Knowledge, and/or Skills
- Conference Experience – Previous participation in the MSC Abbott Family Leadership Conference as a Delegate, followed by serving in a leadership role as a Director or Vice Chair.
- Commitment to Growth & Learning – A strong desire to continuously develop leadership skills, seek mentorship and apply past experiences to enhance the conference’s success.
- Dedication to Service – A deep personal investment in the mission of MSC Abbott, with a willingness to dedicate significant time and effort to ensure the conference’s continued impact.
Required MSC Council Officer Responsibilities:
- Represent the MSC Council: As a student leader in the MSC Council, your actions are a direct reflection and representation of the organization and our values. Committee Chairs have the responsibility of directing their committee’s programs and goals to ensure alignment with those of the MSC Council.
- Alignment with the MSC Programs mission: MSC Programs will prioritize support for programs, experiences, and student leadership opportunities that reflect and align with its mission of engaging students in providing purposefully designed campus programs and service opportunities that prepare them to be global leaders.
- Attend Weekly Monday Night Meetings: When creating your academic schedule, please be mindful of your requirement to attend Program Assembly meetings every Monday night at 6pm.
- Complete the full Academic Year: MSC Officer positions are meant to be performed for the full academic year including the Summer.
- Attend Leadership Launch (& August Leadership Refresher): Every spring, the MSC hosts Leadership Launch in order to assist with the transition of new leaders.
- Understand the Student-Staff Partnership: Each committee is assigned an advisor by MSC Programs. Through that advisor, MSC Programs and the MSC Council are committed to strong student/staff partnerships and built upon the idea that there is mutuality in teaching and learning and that advisors and students see each other as a resource; each group offering what it uniquely can provide.
