A) Purpose To empower the communities of all TAMU SOM campuses with evidence-based education about different types of cancer with an emphasis on the most common types, including skin cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lung cancer; To serve as a resource for current medical students; To foster a continuing interest in practitioners and students for lifelong learning. B) Goals To teach organization members how to first educate themselves using evidence-based research and then develop effective presentation content for community education; To deliver cancer education effectively to populations served by the entities outlined above, with an added emphasis on the most common types of cancer; To educate medical students through guest lecturers; To establish relationships with local community groups, student-run free clinics, faith-based organizations, senior activity centers, and schools, at each respective campus; To provide medical students with additional service opportunities through American Cancer Society programs; To raise organization funds and community donations through community events and fundraisers such as "Relay For Life," "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer," "Bark For Life," and profit shares; To promote interest in research. C) Mission Statement The American Cancer Society: Texas A&M School of Medicine Chapter is to educate medical students on the dynamic field of cancer.
