Association of Women Surgeons

Founded: 2021
Health Science Center Medicine (Bryan, TX)
This organization began as an interest group called Women in Surgery around 2014 but we became an AWS chapter in 2021 to connect with other physicians, residents, and medical students regionally and nationally. Find out more about the national organization via their website. In a male-dominated field like surgery, women continue to be discouraged from pursuing certain career goals due to implicit biases, societal expectations, and/or barriers to balancing a career and family. There is a need for more organized support at a medical school level for women who might be interested in surgery to connect with peers overcoming similar hurdles, find mentors among the faculty and physician associates, and learn from others who can speak about balancing career development with family life.
