Cosmological Fine-tuning

Join Ratio Christi every week from 8:30-9:30 in the MSC for a weekly lecture on topics related to Christian apologetics and theology!
What, if anything, can we conclude from the fine-tuning of the universe? We begin by clarifying what cosmological fine-tuning means in contemporary physics—what parameters are said to be “fine-tuned” and in what sense. We then examine the alleged metaphysical implications, focusing on Bayesian formulations of the fine-tuning argument developed by Barnes (2020) and Collins (2018). Finally, we critically engage the principal objections and alternatives—among them multiverse hypotheses, concerns about probability measures, divine psychology, and “God-of-the-gaps” worries—to assess what conclusions, if any, are warranted.
